The Sinner Season 4 Episode 5 Recap

The fifth episode titled “Part V” opens with Harry investigating the Bazegw Cliff. There he finds a stone with blood on it and the crest of a boat. He talks to Meg in the hopes of finding out who owns the boat. Meg takes him to the harbor master’s office. At the office, Harry notices an object similar to the one he saw near the beach. Harry realizes that it belongs to Emiliana Castillo, one of the masters. He finds Emiliana’s address and searches her house for clues. Harry finds a diary detailing Percy’s mental state and the phrase “Free the bone from the flesh” scrawled on a table.

Harry returns home, trying to figure out everything that is going on with Emiliana. Emiliana confronts Harry at home and Harry questions her about Percy. After hesitating at first to share, Emiliana tells Harry that she had seen Percy grow up, but they didn’t start talking until after he returned from Portland. Emiliana is involved in certain ritual practices. She claims the activities help her connect with nature, and Percy asked Emiliana to teach her.

Emiliana refuses to reveal details of her sessions with Percy until she can trust Harry. To gain Emiliana’s trust, Harry performs the drowning ritual, which Percy had also performed. In flashbacks, Percy began to share his feelings, and eventually, Emiliana realized that his past haunted Percy. Emiliana prepared Percy to undergo a ritual that was supposed to help her leave behind the relationships that held her in life. However, Percy injured herself (with the Celtic star), and the ritual ended abruptly.

In the present, Harry learns from Sonya that the mysterious person in a red raincoat stole photos that Sonya had clicked on. She sends Harry the backup of these photos. Harry shows a photo with two boats to Meg, which identifies one of the boats as Brandon’s. However, as they prepare to interview Brandon, tragedy strikes.

The Sinner Season 4 Episode 5: Is Brandon Dead?

Towards the end of the episode, Harry and Meg wait for Brandon to return with his boat near the docks. Brandon is Percy’s ex-boyfriend. After their breakup, Brandon married someone else but remained close to the Muldoons. In the previous episode, Harry suspects that Brandon is the person in the red raincoat who ransacked his house. Photos taken by Sonya apparently confirm that Brandon was somehow involved in Percy’s death.

In the end, Harry and Meg see Brandon’s boat arrive at the docks, but no one is driving it. They find that the boat has been put on autopilot to reach shore. Meg notices that the fishing net is strangely tied, and when she hauls the net back, Brandon’s corpse rises to the surface. Therefore, Brandon is definitely dead. It’s clear someone killed him, as evidenced by the hole in the back of Brandon’s head. It’s likely someone knows that Harry is getting closer to the truth and killed Brandon to cover their tracks.

What was holding Percy back?

In the episode, we also get some insight into the things that bothered Percy. In the flashbacks, we see that she learned of her father’s drug addiction but was able to work things out with him. However, the same can’t be said for her relationship with Meg and Colin. Meg wanted Percy to take over their family business, which made Percy feel under pressure. Percy tried to apologize to Colin after their argument over faith, but Colin was still angry with her.

However, the thing that affects Percy the most is the death of someone for whom she is somehow responsible. The Celtic star that Percy carried with her to her death belongs to a woman named Valerie, who apparently passed away because of Percy. The incident continued to haunt the Muldoon girl and could also be the main reason for her suicide. We’ll just have to stay tuned to learn more about Valerie and her connection to Percy. The revelation adds another layer to Harry’s quest to find out what prompted Percy to kill himself as the detective himself struggles with the guilt of killing Jamie.
